Zach Kohn notched the hat trick and the El Paso Rhinos won their 22nd game against just one loss with an 8-2 win over the Texas Renegades at Sierra Providence Events Center Saturday night.
Cooper Frederick won his second game in three starts for the Rhinos, stopping 16 of 18 Renegades shots. Frederick is with El Paso from its sister franchise in the North American Hockey League, the Topeka Roadrunners, while the Rhinos’ Andrew Duff gets to spend some time in one of the top leagues in U.S. junior hockey.
El Paso dominated from start to finish in Saturday’s game, as Kohn scored the first goal just 22 seconds into the game.
The Rhinos outshot Texas, 50-18, chasing goaltender Kyle Sykes from net to start the third period.
Head coach Cory Herman was also pleased with El Paso’s effort on special teams, as the Rhinos went 3-for-4 on the power play and got a short-handed goal (from Kohn, a beautiful top shelf strike in the second period) as well.
Kohn leads El Paso’s scorers with 20 goals and 25 assists.
The two teams will duel once more Sunday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. MST at the SPEC. Call the Rhinos front office at 915.479.PUCK (7825) or go to the Rhinos’ website at www.elpasorhinos.com.
