With over two months until the season begins, the Rhinos have taken to the roller rink to host a free weekly camp.
The first day of the camp series registered nearly 20 participants, the youngest of which was six years old. Many of the skaters had experience with ice hockey through the El Paso Hockey Association\’s (EPHA) youth hockey programs. Other campers currently skate with the Nations Tobin\’s in-line team, the Moose. The few participants that had never skated before received one-on-one help from Rhino staff.
After helping suit up campers in gear provided by the EPHA, Assistant Coach Austin Balko then guided the campers through passing and shooting drills, acting as the coach and the goaltender. The camp ended with a scrimmage game between the blue team and the red team.
While this camp aids young players in learning about the sport, it also provides a hockey presence in the Sun City. The parent volunteers that coach the Nations Tobin team are hoping that this camp gathers enought interest for a 2014-2015 in-line league to be formed.
This camp series continues on August 6, 13, 20, & 27 and September 3 & 10 from 5 pm to 6 pm. If you know of a child under 12 that is interested in attending the camp, please email therman@rhinohockey.org.
