St. Mary’s University has signed another Rhino: David Nelson.
One of the most experienced veterans on the 2013-2014 team, Nelson started with the Rhinos in 2011. As a young forward, he wasted no time in showing his offensive capabilities when he notched 33 points in 43 games. In his first El Paso post-season, his six goals and three assists contributed to the team’s playoff success. In his sophomore year, Nelson’s speed and force grew as his penalty minutes doubled. His growth as a player helped him notch 61 points during the 2012-2013 season.
More mature in his final season with the Rhinos, David’s knack for scoring in pressure situations was unprecedented. During the regular season, the forward posted three power play goals, three shorthanded goals, and three game winning goals. He extended his consistent performance with seven goals in the post-season, three of which came in the Thorne Cup championship game. In addition to his offensive talent, David\’s fearlessness made him somewhat of a defensive forward. His versatility, one of his most valuable assets, allowed him to serve on both the power play and penalty kill units. The Minnesota native\’s 60 point season coupled with his intense, physical play undoubtedly aided the Rhinos in earning the Thorne Cup and National titles.
