Though the defense wasn’t quite where Rhinos head coach Cory Herman wanted it to be — goaltender Arthur Hollinger was left on his own to deal with each of the Outlaws’ five goals – El Paso’s puck possession, speed and skill were just as deadly as they were when the Rhinos took home the Thorne Cup.
Returning Rhinos were complemented by new recruits after El Paso lost eight players to junior hockey’s age limit of 21. Returning forward and team captain Nick Gorup scored twice, but was outdone by new Rhinos forward Drew Montague who notched a hat trick in his first performance with the team.
El Paso and Colorado will meet again Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. MDT.
