hane Callahan and Nick Gorup scored two goals each and Arthur Hollinger stopped 15 of 16 shots from the Capital Thunder as the El Paso Rhinos downed the Capital Thunder, 8-1, at the Western States Hockey League Showcase in Las Vegas, NV, Saturday.
Six different Rhinos scored as El Paso erased an early 1-0 deficit midway through the first period on Callahan’s power play blast at 12:01.
Just 49 seconds later Zach Goller scored the game winner, and the Rhinos were off and running.
Nick Gorup scored late in the first period to make it 3-1 at intermission; then David Fegler, new El Paso forward Justin Erhart with his first goal as a Rhino, Gorup, Callahan and defenseman Kyle Shapiro made it a romp with five second period goals.
El Paso is 3-0 against competition from the WSHL’s Western Division in Las Vegas, and will wrap up the Showcase with a game against the team they beat for the Thorne Cup last March, the division-leading Phoenix Polar Bears, 8 a.m. Sunday morning at the Las Vegas Ice Center.
