It’s not often that the borderland produces high quality hockey players, but Ty Erramouspe happens to be one those who have made it.
The 2016 Santa Teresa High School graduate is a key figure for the El Paso Rhinos hockey team and played a pivotal role in the team’s 2-0 series win vs. Oklahoma City to claim the Western States Hockey League championship at the El Paso County Coliseum Events Center last Saturday night and a spot in the Thorne Cup Finals from April 9-13 in Ogden, Utah.
“I started playing hockey when I was three and it’s been a great ride ever since,”said the 6-foot Erramouspe, who plays forward. “I play the game with passion and as I got older and learned more about the game, more opportunities came my way. I was able to travel around the United States and Canada where I could expand on my game.”
Erramouspe learned the game in the Rhinos youth program and has learned much about the game from Rhinos coach Cory Herman.
“I’ve known Ty since he was a little kid and seen him grown into a tremendous player,” Herman said. “He has a great skill set and it’s been awesome to see what he’s accomplished in the game He’s worked really hard to get to this point in his career.”
Erramouspe scored the game winning goal in Friday’s 3-2 win vs. Oklahoma City, a moment he will never forget.
“To help our team win like that means so much to me,” he said. “I love playing on this team with this group of guys. We have a strong team, a team that can win the Thorne Cup Finals. A lot of the fans in the stands are people I know and that means something to me.”
Erramouspe was a standout athlete at Santa Teresa High School, where he was also a varsity baseball player. He played second base in high school and had some interest from college baseball programs for his talents, but a shoulder injury put those dreams aside. Instead he is a member of the Rhions, who compete in a league that is an Amateur Athletic Union-sanctioned Tier II Junior A Hockey League.
