For the third straight game the El Paso Rhinos scored a goal in the opening minute of play and held an opponent under 20 shots on goal, beating the San Antonio Diablos, 8-1, at the Northwood Ice Arena in the Alamo City for their seventh straight win.
El Paso (7-0-0, 14 points) continued its stellar play, holding the hosts to only 16 shots while pouring in 49 against Diablos’ goaltenders Anthony Maroney and Mike Becker. Rhinos goalie Arthur Hollinger turned away 15 shots in the win.
Team captain Nick Gorup scored the game’s first goal 14 seconds into the game and followed it with another in a three-goal opening stanza at 6:13.
Sandwiched between Gorup’s goals was one from Jeffrey Schmudlach at 5:42.
El Paso topped the first 20 minutes with a four-goal second period, beginning and ending it with power play goals from Zach Kohn at 4:23 and Austin Balko at 15:42, while Kyle Shapiro and John Scorcia scored 11 seconds apart, at 10:35 and 10:46, respectively.
Josh Williams had the game’s final goal 6:02 of the third period.
The Diablos will host the Rhinos for two more games Saturday and Sunday before returning home for three games against the Tulsa Rampage beginning Friday, Oct. 24th, at 7 p.m. MDT, at the Sierra Providence Events Center.
