Rhinos mascot featured in Animal Planet documentary

08/11/2014 2:24 PM -

If you haven’t already heard of Tatenda the rhino, his heartwarming story can be seen in the Animal Planet documentary “There’s a Rhino In My House”. Born in 2007, Tatenda was cared for by native Zimbabwean Judy Travers after his parents were tragically killed by poachers.

The El Paso Rhinos adopted Tatenda as a mascot after Karrie Kern, CEO of the U.S. operations branch of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force watched a Rhinos game. Kern admired the picture of the rhino on the team bus and jokingly suggested that the organization adopt Tatenda.

The Rhinos followed through on Kern’s suggestion and adopted Tatenda in 2008. Though Tatenda was not moved to the US, the organization continues to contribute to his food and upkeep expenses.
