Trey Hughes scored a Texas Hat Trick while only five of his teammates were held without a goal -- and two of them were goalies -- as the El Paso Rhinos set a franchise record for goals scored and margin of victory in a 20-4 win over the Dallas Snipers.
Having finished second in Junior Nationals last season, the Rhinos wanted to start fast in their first home game and did exactly that, racking up nine goals in the opening period (also a team record); including two short-handed tallies from Mike Rivera and Brenden Gust that came 40 seconds apart on the same Dallas power play.
An El Paso native, Rivera was elected team captain this season.
Among many notable numbers was a Rhinos power play that went 6-for-8, and that five El Paso players that scored multiple goals. Jackson Hewitt, Tyler Basham, Gust and Matt Tritsch each scored twice to go along with Hughes' four.
The Rhinos (4-0-0, 8 points) play the Snipers (0-13-0) twice more, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. MDT and Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. MDT.
